Popular Causes

It's probably associated with the election seasons, but the "fad" causes tend to show up in full force in the fall.  Locally, there's a multitude of causes that the town will support.  There's the Humane Society, the local food kitchen, etc.  Then, you see the big-box fad charities or "awareness" groups that pop up.  It almost seems like the popular thing to do to give money to some random charity.  There seems to be always 3 big ones at a time.  Darfur, AIDS and Breast Cancer are the big ones this year.

Okay, so, every single year all the celebrities take a break from their drugs, sex and busy marriage schedule to do a concert or something for the poor AIDS victims of Africa.  I'm all for helping people, don't get me wrong, but not in the name of fashion.  When George Cloony's face shows up somberly on the TV talking about the world concert to benefit AIDS victims it almost seems like a joke.  If you watch really closely, once you see that first celebrity support a cause the rest of them quickly announce their plans to fall in line behind him.

Breast Cancer Awareness.  Wow, I really get a kick out of "awareness" groups, months and bracelets.  It just screams, "We don't really want to do anything, but we would like for you to be aware that this exists..."  Of course we know it exists.  Breasts exist.  Cancer exists.  Therefore...
Besides, most of us have known a friend or family member that has struggled with or lost her life to breast cancer.  There's no need for awareness...but because of awareness's popularity I can now buy a Pink Ribbon Bagel, a pink phone or any amount of pink jewelry to support breast cancer research.  Now, supporting the right group is awesome, and you need to do research to figure out where your money is going before you give it away.

"Death of a Nation."  This is the eu de Culture this month.  All over college campuses you can see the bright red shirts donning a silhouette decorated with cross hairs.  We need to save Darfur, and everyone's convinced that going to the UN will do that.  First of all, when has the UN done anything productive?  Secondly, who listens to the UN besides American liberals?
Donating to the Darfur Charities probably won't get you very far until we (we, the world) come up with a viable solution for the conflict there.  What would work is donating your time or money to an organization that's on the ground actually helping people with food, medicine and supplies.
And, contrary to popular belief, universal amnesty is not the answer.

Perhaps I've become a little cynical over the years as I've progressed from idealism to being a little more realistic in my viewpoints.  I find no value in "fad" charities or organizations.  There's so much more you can do through proper research of these funds (you might be surprised as to exactly how much of your money goes to the cause).  You can even do more by donating to a children's hospital, local nonprofit pregnancy center (meant for helping women and not creating victims out of them), or reputable organizations like the National Right to Life.  Donate your time...sometimes it's more valuable than your money to a charity that lacks manpower.

I would like to see these student-peers of mine take off their "Save the Ta-Tas" and "Save Darfur" T-Shirts and begin to put some of their time, energy and money into those causes if it really is important to them.  The T-shirts aren't meant to just be a fashion trend.

Oh, they have a fire engine red iPod Nano.

Progressive?

When did the word progressive go from meaning "continuous improvement" to "finding more and more ways of screwing ourselves up?"  There was a time when improvement was the goal and people would create new and better ways of doing things without destroying things that we should hold to be most important.

For example...progressive parents.  They don't discipline their children because, of course, discipline is wrong.  If a child frowns then you go after whomever made that child frown.  You don't get after the child because he's only frowning because you wouldn't let him steal from the candy store or make fun of the girl down the street, or not do his homework.  Children that have no discipline can't function in society.  They don't know how and they are, on the whole, more unhappy than children that have learned discipline.

Progressive Sexuality.  Kind of creepy, right?  "Have sex with whomever you want to, and it's okay!"  Well, I don't know about you, but I think it's pretty obvious how the pieces are supposed to fit together.  A 2-year-old could easily put a 2 piece puzzle together, so why can't 2 adults?  That, I don't know the answer either.  What makes it even weirder is that people are willing to subsidize that kind of behavior, or even celebrate it.  There are even doctors telling people that being whatever-sexual is part of the gene code.  Now, I wonder if I can get one to tell me that Compulsive Diet Coke Drinking is also part of my genetic makeup.  I can't control what you do in your personal life.  That's part of what makes this country so great, but I can tell you that you are not going to take others down with you while you do it.  When sexuality starts to threaten other's lives through the new proposed marriage laws (or judges breaking the laws), adoption, special favors (politically and otherwise), etc. then that's where the line is crossed.

Progressive Classrooms.  This is easy.  Since when did "progressive" classrooms turn into subjective ones?  They are becoming more skewed and cirriculum is focused on only one side of many issues.  To achieve a balanced education we should be teaching kids BOTH sides of an issue instead of just one.  After all, we're trying to create ciritical thinkers here, aren't we?

These are just a few rambling thoughts stemming from some recent events.

No Habla?

No Habla Espan...uh.  Well, it's true.  I'll admit it.  I am an American, and I don't speak Spanish.  Maybe the public school system really did fail me, for the only South-of-the-border-talk I know comes from Speedy Gonzalez or that little Taco Bell Dog.  I know, I am unpatriotic, a traitor even.  How could I not learn the language of "the people?"  Well, maybe it's because I don't consider them "our people" in the first place.
For starters, it's supposed to be a free country, yes?  I decided to never learn Spanish but instead pour my efforts into other languages and talents.  I once figured (in my naive younger years) that those who would want to join me in this glorious country would do so legally and blend in accordingly.  Oh, I absolutely love all the different cultures this country embodies, but this is also an independent country.  We aren't ruled by Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Switzerland or Romania.  We're the United States of America.  Our language is English.  We like hot dogs.  Our citizens are here legally...well, for the most part.
Suddenly, I'm finding myself surrounded by people who have no wish to be an American.  I can't read product labels in the grocery store because they are in Spanish.  I can't even go to most places consumers go without having to try and order something from someone who doesn't speak English well.
I wonder if I might be a little jealous of illegal immigrants someday.  I mean, I could have free health care, social security, no taxes, government welfare and low-cost housing for being illegal.  I could have people in the senate working for me if I were illegal.  People would consider me a saint, or at the very least, a refugee.  There's only one problem...it's illegal for them to be here in the first place.
Celebrate diversity, yes.  But don't celebrate division.  Legal/Illegal citizens is only one of the divisive factors tearing away at our country, but you don't have to allow it to continue.

Why Choose Abortion?

Why would I choose abortion anyway? If I got pregnant (especially out of wedlock) the government is willing to pay me money for each kid I have. Now, regardless of the fact that it isn't enough money to support my kids the way I want to (and the fact that I'm teaching them to be irresponsible and abandon their own children later)...it is money, and I get it for having babies. If I don't have a job, I get even more money...so what's the point in looking? If I can pinpoint a certain minority that I might be a member of (in my particular state 'white' is a minority...though not a rewarded one), turn homosexual (except when making babies), join the ACLU and claim disability then I'm set for life.

So why have an abortion?

Sure, I can go whenever I want to. Despite the rules I'll bet I could go get 'counseled' and the 'procedure' all in the same day if I wanted to. No, the government won't pay for it, but it's not a lot of money...only a couple hundred dollars. I don't need permission...I can have a pick-up service at my door if I need to and I don't need to have ANYthing with me but the money. Even the father doesn't have to consent. Even if I were a minor, I could get someone to speak for me and I still wouldn't have to tell my parents. Nah, that sounds like too much work. I think I'll go get my non-perscription, confidental dose of "Plan B" and abort my baby the easy way...that way I don't have to hear her little heartbeat, feel her kicks or even give a second thought to what she might look like. No, I like the FDA, for they made it even easier to violate and destroy not only my own body, but that of my unborn baby as well. And to think, none of this would be possible if it weren't for the PPFA, the NARAL, the ACLU, NOW, Hillary and the Kennedys. For that matter, let me thank every "leftist" organization and individual. Without you my generation might be bigger in number, more diverse in thoughts and culture and better able to carry the weight you'll leave when you pass from this world.
